Tootsy behind the scenes

Straight out of college she joined the country’s leading media company to work in the sales department, 23 years later, Elvira “Tootsy” Echauz-Angara now plays so many roles one would think she’s a superwoman.

From being a fashion icon, wife to Senator Sonny Angara, mom to three talented kids, and of course a media executive, Tootsy’s plate seems so full but she faces each day with a positive disposition.

“I wanted to be a reporter but I was told that I’m more fit to work behind the scenes. But it worked out quite well,” the 44-year-old Tootsy told Manila Standard in an interview.

She’s currently on leave to assist her husband who’s traveling around the country. Sen. Sonny Angara is gunning for a Senate seat as a reelectionist.

“Before kasi, Sonny’s dad was there to help him out. Now someone has to manage it, to oversee everything, so I decided to take a break until May 13,” she said.

It was also a conscious effort on her part since she works as sales head in ABS-CBN and it’s inevitable for her to deal with political ad placements.

“Since I’m campaigning for my husband, seeing other politicians placing an ad, I felt uncomfortable. So, I spoke to my boss and said that it’s a little awkward. And I don’t want people to say that there’s a conflict of interest since they might think I have media access,” she explained.

Although she and her husband are on the campaign trail, their family still finds some time to bond. But she admitted that there are a few things they need to sacrifice to make things work.

“When Sonny and I were still dating, I kind of accepted that his life would be like this. When we were watching movies back then, he’d only sleep because he’s in law school. We dated for five years before we tied the knot,” Tootsy narrated.

“I have some friends who have politician husbands, and they take it against their husband that they have to leave whenever there’s something urgent that they need to deal with. Sonny though, I still don’t know if he’s just really good at mind conditioning, we’re used to it since his dad was like that as well. They grew up in that kind of setting so I don’t feel bad about it. That’s our set up even before marriage,” she carried on.

Needless to say, Tootsy and her children already feel comfortable with the kind of set up they have and kind of accepted that Sen. Sonny’s job is “very demanding in terms of time.”

“Javier, the small one always makes tampo, but the two already understand the situation especially that they have their own thing. Kids are very independent. Sonny was raised by very traditional and strict parents. Me, I was raised by a hippy mom, so we’re really different but one thing we agree on is that we really want our kids to pursue their own dreams that’s why the eldest is a tennis player, my daughter is an artist, she’s into music. We were both also never forced that’s why we let our children decide what they wanted to do.”

But what’s an ordinary weekend like at the Angara’s residence? By ordinary we mean, mom and dad don’t have any other “work commitment” and the children don’t have any training or practice for the sport and activity they love.

“Sometimes we sing using the mic you connect to your TV set. Although you wouldn’t see Sonny singing in public, he’s unstoppable at home. The whole family loves watching movies together. We bond inside the car. We love traveling. We take the kids to weddings we attend to,” Tootsy shared.

With a family that seems so happy and perfect, Tootsy revealed that they are like any other normal double income household. Their relationship as a family faces the same challenges as everybody else. Her married life, too, is nothing extraordinary.

“Sometimes we argue but at the end of the day we respect each other views,” she concludes.
