That song is “Pareho Tayo,” uploaded on the rap icon’s official SoundCloud account (soundcloud.com/glocdash9), and free for download and streaming.
As he had announced on his social media accounts: you can listen and download this song without having to spend a single cent. And his fans and supporters have listened.
A day and a half after he first posted the song, it has gotten 600 downloads and has been listened to for close to 8,000 times.
These numbers are based on the site’s official statistics, and it is no joke when one considers how slow and expensive Internet access in this country is.
“Pareho Tayo” is Gloc-9’s second independent release. Last year, he released the single “Payag,” a song that speaks of the state of politics and politicking in the country, one that has numbed and dumbed the nation, enough for us to stop asking questions, and just believe in the same kind of politics every election.
“Pareho Tayo” is a fitting follow-up, inadvertently so to speak, to “Payag.”
Using the first person perspective, one listens to Gloc-9 speaking of a life of difficulty, where basic rights are considered as privileges, and a life of debt is the rule and not the exception.
A dominant critique in this song is our insistence on seeing difference. Food on our table, color of our skin, the social class we belong to are some of the issues deemed more important.
To some extent “Pareho Tayo” speaks of the Jack of compassion of one for the other, where difference is a line drawn between us and them, the weak versus the powerful, the poor versus the wealthy.
