These five herbs and spices can cause illness in dogs, said Gardenuity.

1. Nutmeg can cause severe upset stomach in dogs. It can also damage a dog’s nervous system.

2. Fresh onion and onion powder can cause vomiting, upset stomach, diarrhea and severe damage to red blood cells in dogs.

3. Garlic is toxic to dogs in large amounts. Small amounts in powdered form is still okay.

4. Cocoa powder can cause kidney and heart problems, and is very harmful to a dog’s nervous system.  Though it is not a spice by definition, it is often used in cooking, thus, its inclusion here.

5. Black pepper is not poisonous in itself but it contains piperine which increases the absorption of prescription meds. “This causes a great risk of overdose for your pet, so it is best to avoid black pepper if possible,” Gardenuity said.
