Life as they know it

The nightmare that started in Marawi City on May 23 officially ended with neutralization of the remaining terrorists that stalked the once-thriving city.

The rest of us, hundreds of kilometers away, could only speculate about the horrors that the residents endured during the months-long siege. There was death and fighting, and for the others who managed to avoid the crossfire, uncertainty about how much longer it would be before they could resume life as they knew it.

Thankfully Marawi has been freed from the terrorists, but this is just where it all begins.

Precious funds are now pouring in for the rehabilitation of the city, damaged and razed to the ground. Martial law, which was supposed to last until the end of this year, has been extended—the mayor of Marawi has expressed support for this decision.

There is a task as daunting as the need to rid the city of terrorists. It is building up structures anew and repairing the people’s spirit broken by violence and displacement. It is ensuring nothing of the sort happens again. It is enabling the people to rise amid the rubble and realize their potential.

Of course, Marawi is just one of the many fronts of our battle against terrorism and against all other ills that plague our nation. The rebuilding must be done alongside other efforts against poverty, corruption and many others. But we will always watch how Marawi is rebuilt and fortified.

Behind it all is the people, who must take great pains to accept their loss before they can proceed. We look forward to seeing —no, marvelling at—how they have picked up from where their daily, mundane routines were disrupted.
