Escoda Shoal takes center stage in latest Philippines, China bilateral talks

The Philippines and China held high level bilateral discussions Wednesday on their ongoing maritime disputes in the South China and West Philippine Seas, primarily focusing on Escoda Shoal, known in Beijing as Xianbin Reef.

In a statement released by the Chinese Ministry on Foreign Affairs, both sides reportedly “engaged in a frank and comprehensive discussion, particularly addressing the ongoing issue surrounding Xianbin Reef.”

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Chen Xiaodong and Philippine Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro led the meeting as part of the Bilateral Consultation Mechanism (BCM) between both countries hosted by Beijing.

“China reaffirmed its stance, urging the immediate withdrawal of Philippine vessels from the area, and emphasized its commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and upholding the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.

“The two countries agreed to maintain open diplomatic channels through the BCM for future dialogue and conflict resolution,” it added.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has yet to issue its own statement regarding this development as of this posting.
