Pollution still health danger

AIR pollution is the single-biggest health risk, says Ruth Marie Atienza, operations manager of Mapecon Philippines, quoting a report by the World Health Organization which had earlier said smoke from vehicle tailpines to dung-fired stoves in India claimed seven million lives the world over in 2012.

WHO said one-third of deaths occurred in the fast-developing Asian countries where rate of cardiovascular and pulmonary disease have been on the rise.

The Mapecon executive urges a more concrete action against climate change saying we are lacking enforcement of environmental laws.

“We are aware of the grave threat posed by the phenomenon but it seems we tolerate it,” says Atienza.

Atienza says that at this stage there are still lots of vehicles roaming the roads belching carbon monoxide and factory buildings emitting black smoke. Carbon dioxide is the  main culprit in air pollution.

Atienza’s stance jibes with the view of World Bank president Jim Yong Kim who said pollution is not being taken seriously and time is running out to avoid consequences like flooded cities and dried out farmlands.” He also said “we are quickly coming to a point where we are not going to be able to keep global warming below two degrees Celsius.”
