THE Energy Department said Thursday it will revoke the standards compliance certificate of Omni Gas Corp. after an explosion took place at its LPG refilling plant in Pasig City that hurt 20 people.

The explosion also led to a fire that caused P20 million in damage, the Bureau of Fire Protection said.

Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi said Omni Gas could not operate until it was able to secure a new certificate after the incident was investigated.

“Violations of the DoE Circular on LPG Rules merit administrative sanctions on those responsible,” he said.

The fire that followed the explosion started at 1:06 a.m. on Jan. 11 and was put out at 3:10 a.m.

Witnesses said the smell of LPG woke them up before the explosion.

LPG refilling firms are required to comply with the Fire Code of the Philippines and local government ordinances on operational safety.

“Public safety is always our priority and the DoE  is looking closely   at this unfortunate incident which injured at least 20 people,” Cusi said.
