Filipino jihadist assured of aid from Foreign Affairs

THE Department of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday it will extend legal and consular assistance to a 32-year-old Filipino worker who was sentenced to 10 years in prison after she was found guilty of being a member of a jihadist group and plotting attacks against Kuwait.

“We are verifying the report [on her sentence], but in any case our embassy is prepared to extend legal and consular assistance to the worker,” Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Jose said.

He said the Philippine government will make sure her rights are not violated.

Kuwaiti authorities claim that the Filipina came to Kuwait in June 2016 to work as a domestic, and that she had pledged allegiance to ISIS and was planning to launch an attack in the Gulf Arab state.

They also claim that since her arrival, the Filipina had been communicating with Islamic State officials in Libya. They say Kuwait security forces were able to trace one of her email accounts and found messages that showed her communications with the jihadists in Libya.
