THE Philippine government extended Friday its felicitations to Thai King Vajiralongkorn, who ascended to his country’s throne.

“The Philippines wishes to convey our warmest congratulations to his Majesty, King Maha Vajiralongkorn, on his ascension and and proclamation as the King of Thailand,” Communications Assistant Secretary Ana Marie Banaag told a news briefing.

“We are confident his reign will continue to bring happiness, peace and prosperity to the Thai people. We wish for him success as he leads the Kingdom of Thailand,” she added.

Thai Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn became Thailand’s new king, succeeding his much-revered late father King Bhumibol Adulyadej last Thursday.

He becomes King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun, the 10th  monarch  of  the  Chakri dynasty, but will also be known as Rama X.

He accepted the throne in a televised broadcast following an invitation from parliament, formalizing his ascension.

King Bhumibol, the world’s longest-reigning monarch, died October 13.

The late king was widely seen as a pillar of stability during seven decades of political turmoil in Thailand.

The crown prince had been expected to become the next king the day after his father’s death, but Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha at the time said he had asked to delay the official proclamation so he could mourn.

“I would like to accept in order to fulfil his majesty’s wishes and for the benefit of all Thais,’’ he said in a televised statement.
