UNA criticizes Roxas, LP over unfiled statements

THE United Nationalist Alliance said Sunday it expected the Commission on Elections not to accede to the Liberal Party’s demand for a two-week extension to file Statements of Contributions and Expenses by the candidates in this year’s elections.

UNA spokesman Mon Ilagan said the public expected the Comelec to stand firm in its position not to extend the June 8 deadline, and not to treat the Liberal Party and Manuel Roxas II with kid gloves.

“The people now want to see a Comelec that truly enforces the rule of law. Turning soft on Mar Roxas and the Liberal Party, and treating them with kid gloves will only highlight suspicions that the Comelec is part of some conspiracy during the May 9 elections,” Ilagan said in a statement.

He said Roxas’ and the LP’s failure to submit their SOCE on June 8 was a shameful display of arrogance and disrespect for the law.

“We find LP’s request for a 14-day extension to complete their SOCEs a shameful, disgraceful and extreme display of arrogance and total lack of respect for the law,” Ilagan said.

“Their disregard for the non-extendable period given by the Comelec only shows the over-bearing big-headedness and sense of entitlement of Mar Roxas. His arrogance continues to pervade as if he was still in power.”

Ilagan said UNA expected the Comelec to deny the LP’s plea for an additional two weeks to complete the filing of its SOCEs.

Comelec Resolution 9991 says the late filing of SOCE amounts to a de-facto non-filing of the SOCE, which has the effect of forfeiture of elective posts aside from hefty penalties.

Republic Act 7166—otherwise known as the Synchronized Local and National Elections and for Electoral Reforms—does not authorize the Comelec to extend the deadline of the filing of SOCE.

“Kung pagbibigyan ng Comelec ang LP at si Mar Roxas, ano na nga ba ang silbi ng ating mga batas? Should the Comelec accommodate their request, we would consider it unfair for those law-abiding citizens who made it before the deadline,” Ilagan said.

“Bakit daw sya di makapag-submit ng SOCE? Kung sakali man na pagbigyan sila ng Comelec, hindi po katanggap-tanggap ang ganitong akomodasyon dahil lamang di nila na-xerox ang mga resibo.”

During the presidential debate in Cebu City last March, Roxas criticized TV5 for allowing UNA presidential candidate Jejomar Binay to bring in documents. Roxas said  everything should be rules-based and policies should not be frequently changed.

“Ang problema kay Mar Roxas eh nakadikit pa rin sa pagkatao niya ang sense of entitlement. Lagi niyang sinasabi na dapat sundin natin ang batas pero siya mismo ang walang respeto sa batas. He is fond of invoking respect for laws but he himself is a serial offender when it comes to simple rules,” Ilagan said.

Ilagan said that in 2014, Roxas was suspended by the Board of Wack Wack Golf and Country Club for giving club employees a tongue-lashing over the green fees he did not want to pay.

Witnesses claimed that the former DILG chief allegedly shouted back: “T”•ng ina! Walang presi-presidente sa akin! Walang bawal bawal sa akin.”
