A TOTAL of 1,232 of the 12,072 private elementary and secondary schools all over the country will be raising their tuition for the incoming school year, the Education Department announced Wednesday.

In a statement sent to reporters, the Education Department said 10.27 percent of all private schools in the country were allowed to raise their tuition as long as the schools have “undergone steps to ensure that the increase is reasonable and in accordance with DepEd guidelines which states that 70 percent of the increase must go to teachers’ salaries.”

“Schools were asked to submit necessary documentation that proves consultation between the stakeholders occurred,” the DepED said.

The bulk of the requests for tuition increases came from the National Capital Region with 178 schools approved, followed by Davao Region with 165 schools, Central Luzon with 151 schools, Calabarzon with 127 schools and Ilocos Region with 120 schools approved for tuition hikes.

The regions with the least number of schools approved for tuition hikes were Muslim Mindanao, Caraga and Cotabato.
