Ashfall seen over Mayon

Mayon volcano has just emitted today an ash column stretching to about one kilometer into the sky.

Philippine Institute on Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) Volcanologist Paul Alanis says, the event occured 10:22 am.

"Nagkaroon ng muling paglabas ng gas na may kasamang abo mula sa tuktok ng bulkan (there was a discharge of gas with ash from the summit of the volcano)," Alanis reports.

Alanis explains, magma continues to rise from the base of the volcano.

The ashfall affects mainly the western side of Mayon.

These include the municipalities of Guinobatan, Oas and Polangui.

A pyroclastic flow is also happening over Mayon.

A big chunk of lava is flowing down from the crater through Miisi Gully.

Alanis says, this is a pyroclastic density current that resulted from a collapse of a big chunk of lava and not the explosion type.

This indicates that Mayon remains in an abnormal stage, he adds.

Alert level 3 remains up over the volcano amid the renewed intense volcanic activities since last night.
