‘Business, military must uphold public welfare’

BAGUIO CITY—Business and the military share a common mission of upholding public welfare amidst the stringent challenges that confront both sectors, business tycoon Manuel V. Pangilinan said in a speech before more than 1,000 cadets of the Philippine Military Academy.

Pangilinan said conflict and instability are destructive, retard business, damage assets and infrastructure and discourage employment.

Beyond the economic reasons, Pangilinan said businesses are an integral part of any community. They have a duty to promote and protect the welfare of the people to whom they sell their products and services.

“I believe soldiers are not warmongers because you suffer the deepest wounds and painful scars of war. Both of us dislike war. Both of us pray for a peaceful and prosperous Philippines,” Pangilinan stressed.

He pointed out the Academy’s trinity of values, courage, integrity and loyalty, reverently captures what a solider does for his country, saying that the core values help them build strength when courage falters, find honor when integrity weavers, and preserve loyalty when challenged.

“We all know leadership requires certain basic attributes. Foremost is a strong sense of purpose, a defining ideology, which shapes and informs that leadership. For me, that most noble purpose is alleviation of poverty,” Pangilinan added.

He said he still hopes for a country which protects its natural environment, rewards fulfillment in sports, and recognizes achievements in business, in arts and the armed services.

Filipinos want a country that commands respect throughout the world, not only for its people but also for its culture and history, he added.
