Police nab suspect in deadly Jolo cathedral bombing

Police arrested an alleged member of the Abu Sayyaf group suspected of participating in the deadly bombing of a cathedral in Jolo, Sulu in January 2019.

Reports said the Zamboanga City Police Office confirmed that Kalmi Mustala was served a warrant of arrest in Barangay Sinunuc, Zamboanga.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) said the suspect is an “explosives expert.” Mustala was also reportedly involved in the kidnappings of foreigners in the country.

The PNP said it is readying charges against the suspect including illegal possession of explosives, homicide, frustrated murder, and double attempted murder

In January 2019, the Cathedral of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Jolo, was attacked in what authorities said was a “suicide bombing.” The Sunday explosion killed several churchgoers and state troops

The PNP earlier said the case was declared “closed” after arresting a man said to be connected to the bombers.
