Speaker Lord Allan Velasco on Monday lauded members of the Philippine National Police for their contributions in the fight against COVID-19, as he joined them in celebrating the 26th Police Community Relations Month.

Speaking during the event held at the PNP-National Capital Region Police Office  headquarters in Taguig City, Velasco recognized the role of the country’s police force in keeping communities safe during the pandemic.

“I thank the police for their huge contribution in ensuring peace and order in the country. I know that their job has become even harder because of the ongoing pandemic,” Velasco said in Filipino.

“I also salute our uniformed personnel who have offered and sacrificed their lives, health and safety so that a greater part of the society would remain safe from the disease,” he added.

Velasco also emphasized the importance of the police and local communities working together to ensure peace and order and address criminality.

He said that in order for law enforcement to be truly effective, the police cannot operate alone; they must have the active support and assistance of citizens and communities.

“We need the cooperation of our citizens to further improve our guard against crime, illegal drugs and terrorism,” said Velasco.

Critical cooperation down to the barangay level is needed to ensure that our households and communities are more peaceful,” he said.

The Police Community Relations Month is celebrated each year in July, pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 764. The monthlong celebration aims to develop closer interaction between the police and the communities they serve in handling peace and order concerns.

NCRPO chief Police Major General Vicente Danao Jr. had invited Velasco as guest of honor and speaker at the celebration, which coincided with the regular flag raising ceremony at Camp Bagong Diwa in Bicutan, Taguig City.

Part of the celebration is the awarding ceremonies for deserving PNP personnel and stakeholders, and regional winners of the Sining Bayanihan Arts and Culture Competition.

Velasco also administered the oath for regional and district officers and advisers of Kabataan Kontra Droga at Terorismo or KKDAT, a PNP program designed to organize a movement that encourages and strengthens the youth’s ability in suppressing illegal drug and terrorism problems in the community.

Velasco also received a briefing from Danao and other NCRPO officials about the ongoing security preparations for the sixth and final State of the Nation Address of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to be held at the Batasan Pambansa complex in Quezon City on July 26.
