The Bureau of Customs’ (BOC) intensified campaign against smuggling has resulted in the seizure of more than P19.22 billion worth of contraband and other illegally imported goods in the first quarter of 2023.
The confiscations during the period involved imitation goods worth more than P13.249 billion, smuggled agricultural products worth over P2.552 billion, cigarettes and other tobacco products worth over P1.748 billion, and illegal drugs worth P849 million.
Other seized items covered general merchandise, steel products, electronics, medical supplies, jewelry, food, chemicals, currency, fuel, and oil.
“We will not tolerate any illegal activities that threaten our nation’s welfare and security,” said Customs Commissioner Bien Rubio as he stressed the agency’s commitment to combat smuggling activities.
The seized goods resulted from 123 Alert Orders (AOs) issued against suspected shipments at ports, as well as 19 Letters of Authority (LOAs) served against various warehouses, storage facilities, and stores with derogatory reports.
The operations were part of the bureau’s initiatives to identify and intercept smuggled goods.
In addition to seizing smuggled goods, the agency revoked the accreditation of 48 importers and 19 customs brokers for violating Customs laws, rules, and regulations.
This action demonstrates the BOC’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity and accountability in its operations.
