PCUP eyes to conduct 80 caravans nationwide

The Presidential Commission on Urban Poor is eyeing to establish at least 80 caravans in Luzon, including the National Capital Region, the Visayas and Mindanao this year.

Chairman and chief executive officer Alvin Feliciano said the caravans would cater to the poor to help them seek employment, and provide services from various government agencies and the private sector.

The agency was flooded with requests on social media, particularly on its official Facebook page, from the netizens coming from different provinces for the PCUP to conduct more on-the-go caravans in 2020, he said.

From 57 places in 2019, the PCUP is targeting to hold 80 caravans nationwide to offer medical missions, job fairs, micro-financing and skills training, among others.

The agency’s Research, Planning and Monitoring Division is now identifying and listing down the poor provinces to be included in this year’s “Serbisyo Caravan,” he said.

Feliciano vowed to reach out to the poorest communities in the countryside as well as those in the far-flung areas to ensure that the needy ones could avail of the agency’s free services.

Apart from the 80 caravans, he said, the PCUP would relaunch its ‘adopt an urban poor community’ program this year.

Feliciano said the agency is more focused on pro-active interventions and delivery of services to help the poorest of the poor rather than focusing on demolition orders.
