4,610 prisoners released by Bureau of Corrections

The Bureau of Corrections had released 4,610 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) from its seven prison facilities in 2021.

In its yearend report, BuCor said that the release of the qualified PDLs was expedited to decongest jails to help mitigate risks posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Among those released were 1,193 PDLs who had been acquitted of their criminal charges; five who had been granted conditional pardon; 2,378 who had served their jail terms; 598 who had been paroled; 43 who had been given probation; eight who had posted bail; and 385 “returnees” or those who had been released but were ordered to return for further verification of their credits under the Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) law.

Of those released, 2,396 PDLs were from the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City, it said.

Released from the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City were 414 PDLs; Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm (SPPF) in Occidental Mindoro, 230; San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm (SRPPF) in Zamboanga City, 423; Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm (IPPF) in Palawan, 99; Leyte Regional Prison (LRP), 210; Davao Prison and Penal Farm (DPPF), 838.

In NBP, the country’s biggest penal facility, over 99 percent of PDLs at the Reception and Diagnostic Center (RDC), medium security compound, and minimum security compound have been vaccinated.

At the NBP’s maximum security compound, BuCor reported a 96-percent vaccination rate.
