International travelers during the New Year holiday increased by almost 100 percent compared to last year, according to the Bureau of Immigration (BI).

BI Commissioner Jaime Morente said that on new year’s eve and new year’s day, the number of arriving passengers increased to 10,140 from only 5,791 last year.

On the other hand, the number of departing passengers on the said two days increased from last year’s 3,770 to 6,951.

“The trend shows a steady improvement in the number of travelers. While the figures remain low, this is a significant improvement from last year.  We’re hoping to see better numbers this 2022,” he added.

BI Port Operations Division Chief Atty. Carlos Capulong likewise reported that airport operations were smooth sailing during the holiday season.

“We ensured that our manpower was maximized as we anticipated an increase in travelers,” said Capulong.

“We also ensured that our e-gates are serviceable to be able to ease lines and ensure social distancing,” he stated.

It can be recalled that 99 new immigration officers were also deployed to augment BI’s airport manpower during the holidays.
