Urban poor office launches 80 public service caravans

In a bid to put people first, the Presidential Commission on Urban Poor has launched 80 people’s caravans to bring public service down to the poor.

Moreover, chairperson and chief executive officer Alvin Feliciano also disclosed the PCUP has tapped the private sector to pilot an adopt-a-community program.

At a media briefing, Feliciano said at least 80,000 people have benefited from their caravans all over Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao with a measly budget of P3 million.

The caravan is offering a job fair for local and overseas employment; a medical-dental outreach program, including eye check-up and circumcision; the issuance of birth, death and marriage certificates, passports, and student permits and driver’s licenses; legal services; health registration; Social Security System voluntary membership; persons with disability and solo parent identification processing; free medicine, and orientation on pro-poor programs.

“The issuance of security papers is a blockbuster. All ages need security papers,” Feliciano told the Manila Standard.

According to Feliciano, the PCUP has partnered with Mercury Drug to provide potable water for an urban poor area in Baras, Rizal; Jollibee Foods Corp. for a feeding program for malnourished Grade two pupils in the public schools, and Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation for the direct insurance for the poorest of the poor under the PCUP’s adopt-a-community program.
