The main airport in Central Visayas will soon be named Lapu-Lapu Cebu International Airport.

This as the House of Representatives approved on third and final reading before it adjourned sine die the bill renaming the Mactan-Cebu International Airport  to Lapu-Lapu Cebu International airport  in honor of the heroic  local chieftain who resisted Spanish colonization.

A total of 189 lawmakers voted for the passage House Bill 9198 that proposes to rename the Mactan-Cebu International Airport as Lapu-Lapu-Cebu International Airport.

The bill, authored by Rep. Raul del Mar of Cebu City, also proposes that the Mactan Cebu International Authority that manages the airport shall also be renamed as Lapu-Lapu-Cebu International Airport Authority.

The bill proposes to amend Republic Act 6958 which created the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority.

MCIAA carries the name of the airport that it administers, which is located in Lapu-Lapu City.

Del Mar said the city was named after the Lapu-Lapu who is regarded as the country’s first hero for repelling the Spanish invader Ferdinand Magellan.

To honor Lapu-Lapu and be consistent with the city’s name and location of its airport, the change of airport name and the corresponding change in the name of the authority will serve two purposes.

“This will give Lapu-Lapu the recognition that the outstanding Filipino deserved, and in the same thrust, improve the choice of name,” Del Mar said.

Furthermore, Del Mar said it is prudent and beneficial to keep the name “Cebu” in the airport name and the name of the authority that manages it.

He said that “Cebu” is better known in the world historically, economically and culturally.

Del Mar cited the importance of “Cebu” which serves a crucial function for branding and as locator of the airport as destination for tourists and other visitors.
