The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) is suing the online social media and news website Rappler for tax evasion.

The BIR has alleged that Rappler Holdings Corporation owes government P 113.84 million pesos in unpaid taxes.

This is supposedly for the taxable income of 2015.

The bureau says, Rappler sold P 181.67 million worth of Philippine Depositary Receipts to two foreign firms.

BIR claims the company failed to pay income tax and value added taxes (VAT) for these deals.

The BIR filed the tax evasion case today at the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Rappler President and Chief Executive Officer Maria Ressa and Rappler treasurer James Bitanga have been named respondents.

For its part, Rappler says, BIR's charge is just the latest government move to harass the company.
