The Senate Committee on Environment and Natural Resources is investigating today the alleged violations of environmental laws in Boracay Island.

Committee Chairperson Cynthia Villar is holding a public hearing on the matter.

This comes, after Senator Joel Villanueva sought a probe.

He reported that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) had issued Environmental Compliance Cerrificates (ECC) to some commercial establishments despite these violations.

Senators Villanueva, Loren Legarda, Nancy Binay and Miguel Zubiri will join Villar in the hearing.

Hours before the inquiry, Villar inspected the commercial establishments which were subjects of complaints and checked their facilities.

She was determining whether or not the resorts were following the so-called 25+5-meter no-build easement zone from the shore.

She also inspected the Boracay Island Water Company.
