Violence erupts as protesters block Pasig road

Violence erupted as an urban poor group set up a barricade and occupied an entire road in Pasig City.

On Thursday morning until mid-afternoon, protesters from the organization Kadamay blocked the area near East Bank Floodway in Sta. Lucia.

They were claiming that they were there to stop the demolition of some 1,000 squatter shanties by operatives from city government.

Four times, the police requested the protesters to vacate the East Bank Road to no avail.

No demolition team arrived.

Those who came were cops whose mission was to remove the blockade.

What followed next was a commotion wherein protesters threw rocks and bottles at the police.

This prompted the police to use water cannons to thwart the militants.

As of 2 pm, the clash has ended.

The road was still close to motorists as it was still littered with objects hurled during the encounter between the cops and protesters.

Many of the cops were injured.

The police made several arrests.

Clearing operations are ongoing in the area on Thursday afternoon.
