DepEd tells Mindanao schools to admit displaced Marawi students

The Department of Education (DepEd) has ordered public schools across the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) to accept students from Marawi who have been displaced due to clashes between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Maute group.

DepEd Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali says, public schools must accept enrollees and transferees who fled from the fighting even if they may not have not have complete school documents.

He says, the transferees may just be temporarily reporting to the schools in places where they had evacuated and they may return to their original schools in Marawi once the city has been cleared of terrorists.

Umali suggests, local DepEd authorities may also set up temporary learning spaces in shelters where Marawi students are staying.

Most of the displaced students are in Iligan City.
