Senator Leila De Lima has filed a bill seeking financial, medical and educational support for persons with autism and special needs.

In filing Senate Bill 1433, the detained lawmaker said, “autism is a developmental disability that has yet to be fully known and understoood in the Philippines.”

De Lima noted, “because of lack of educational and financial support, it is only the upper and middle class families who can afford to send their autistic children to special schools.”

The lawmaker is pushing for the creation of Autism Council of the Philippines.

The measure also gives mandatory PhilHealth coverage for persons with autism.
