More local government units are extending help to communities devastated by Typhoons “Nina” and “Lawin.”

Taguig City officials led by Mayor Laarni Cayetano recently visited the provinces of Albay and Camarines Sur to personally turn over calamity assistance checks amounting to P9 million.

“We want to personally see the situation of the people in Bicol region after the devastation of Typhoon “Nina.” Seeing the typhoon’s aftermath, we saw that the residents really need assistance. We hope that from the amount and aid we have given them, it would help them build a new life,” said Cayetano.

Cayetano, whose hometown Tiwi in Albay province was one of the hardest hit areas of the typhoon, said Taguig also donated toys to the children of the cities and municipalities they visited.

Vice Mayor Ricardo Cruz Jr., who assisted Cayetano, also expressed his sympathy to the victims of the calamity.

“It’s really overwhelming—there’s no electricity, you can see buses and trucks turned upside down, light posts and schools were also destroyed. As we were giving checks for the calamity assistance, one of the Mayors of the municipalities we visited even cried,” he said.

Members of the City Council earlier passed a resolution authorizing the release of P9 million in calamity assistance to the people of the areas severely affected by “Nina” and “Lawin.”

The calamity assistance was donated to the provinces of Albay, Camarines Sur, Cagayan and the Cordillera Administrative Region. The municipalities of Libon, Polangui, Tiwi, Oas and Malinao in Albay received P1 million each; Camarines Sur was given P2 million, while Cagayan and Cordillera each received P1 million.

“Taguigeños will continue to give assistance to our fellow Filipinos. We will always try to extend our support as much as we can to those who are really in need,” Cayetano said.

Last December, “Nina” displaced more than 77,754 families in Albay and Camarines Sur, “Lawin” created P5.2 billion in agricultural damages in Cagayan and displaced 106,456 families in CAR last October.
