Binay wages war on drugs in exclusive villages

Makati City Mayor Abigail Binay on Tuesday reiterated her call for residents and officials of the six exclusive villages in the city to cooperate with the city police in ridding their communities of drug problems.

Binay said the city government’s effort in close coordination with barangay officials and the local police headed by Supt. Rommil Mitra contributed to the successful arrest of more than 1,000 drug personalities in the city since her assumption on July 1.

“I commend the Makati police and our barangay officials and residents for bringing the figure to over 1,000 in a span of two weeks, from over 700 individuals who surrendered in the first half of July,” Binay said.

Mitra, for his part, said that of the 1,049 who gave themselves up to the police last month, 199 were self- confessed drug dealers while 850 were dependents.

Meanwhile, Manila Mayor Joseph  Estrada on Tuesday ordered the chief of the Manila Police District to conduct a deeper background investigation and lifestyle check on every officer and member of the city’s police force, as  more “narco-officials,” judges and policemen were named by President Rodrigo Duterte.

Estrada issued the directive as MPD director Senior Supt. Joel Coronel revealed they have identified 10 “ninja cops” who resell illicit drugs they have confiscated in police operations. The 10 are reportedly still in active duty with the MPD.

“This is the time MPD should prove that they are really the ‘Manila’s Finest.’ They have to weed out their members who are into drugs,” he said.

He reported to Binay that Barangay South Cembo yielded the most number of pushers, 25 in all, followed by Barangay Rizal with 23, and Barangay West Rembo, 14. On the other hand, Barangay Pembo recorded the most number of users with 91, followed by Pitogo, 71, and South Cembo, 55.

Lawyer Michael Arthur Camina, city legal officer and Binay’s spokesman, said the mayor and ranking city policemen are set to meet with barangay officials of the six exclusive villages of Magallanes, Dasmariñas, Forbes, San Lorenzo, Urdaneta and Bel-air.

The Makati police reported that although they have been in constant coordination with the concerned barangay officials, there were still no surrenderees as of July 31 from the exclusive villages.

The said villages, except for Magallanes, earlier issued a certification signed by the barangay captain stating that there were no drug pushers and users monitored in their villages.

The government’s Oplan “Tokhang” or (toktok-hangyo or knock and plead) mandates police station commanders to ask the barangay captains to submit a list of residents known to be into illegal drugs, including pushers, dealers, users and couriers.
