Filipinos who were born in Germany in 2000 can acquire both German and Filipino citizenships, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs.
The DFA said that the new German immigration law took effect on December 20, 2014. The amended German citizenship law, the German Nationality Act or StAG, has abolished the exclusivity rule that obliged children born in Germany of foreigner parents to choose one citizenship over the other citizenship.
For those who were born of Filipino parents, this meant choosing German citizenship over Filipino citizenship, the DFA said.
The Philippine Migration Research Network says at least 40,000 Filipinos live in Germany.
