New license plates to be available

New license plates for motor vehicles will be issued to replace the old designs.

“We begin phasing out the nine various designs currently in use with modern, standardized, and security feature-packed license plates,” said  Transportation and Communications Secretary Antonio Abaya Jr. in a statement .

The new plates will be in black and white with tamper-resistant locks and screws to prevent removal and transfer.

A reflectorized sheeting will enable the plate to be visible from afar and at any angle. Also, the permanent windshield sticker will take over the yearly sticker, and indicate the vehicle’s license plate number and other registration data.

The entire standardization or replacement program will be completed in 2017, according to the agency.

The new plates remain at P450 for four-wheeled motor vehicles. Discarded plates may be kept by owners but will have no valid use.

“These new plates will help improve road safety by curbing illegal practices such as tanggal-plaka, or plate removal and switching,” said Abaya. “They will help enforcers catch criminals and enhance safety for the public.”

According to the Land Transportation Office, the vehicle’s registered owner will be responsible for installing the new standardized plates using the same alphanumeric characters.

But it said “attachment of any unauthorized plate(s) or any accessory or device to and/or around the authorized motor vehicle license plate, or any manner of attachment that impedes in any way the visibility or reflectivity of the authorized motor vehicle license plate shall be strictly prohibited.”
