The Ombudsman has filed before the Sandiganbayan charges of graft and usurpation of powers against Dismissed Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Alan Purisima and Former PNP Special Action Force (SAF) Commander Getulio Napeñas.

This is in connection with their role in the anti-terror operation in Mamasapano, Maguindanao on January 25, 2017 that resulted in the massacre of 44 elite SAF troopers.

The filing of the criminal complaints comes on the eve of the second anniversary of the tragedy.

Earlier, the Ombudsman had junked the appeal filed by Purisima and Napeñas that sought to dismiss the finding of probable cause against them.

The Ombudsman has also found the two former police officials liable for administrative offenses such as grave misconduct, gross neglect of duty and conduct prejudicial to the best interest of the service.
