The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has suspended the Environmental Compliance Certificates (ECC) of two major companies.

In a press conference on Friday, DENR Secretary Gina Lopez identified the firms as property developer Century Communities Corporation in Makati City and Austral-Asia Link Mining Corporation operating in Mati, Davao Oriental.

Century is developing a 58-hectare housing project in La Mesa Watershed in Quezon City for employees of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS).

Lopez said, the ECC issued to Century in 2015 does not include the construction of high-rise buildings that may destroy the watershed’s environment.

The DENR, on the other hand, cites the risk to biodiversity as reason for suspending the ECC of Austral-Asia Link, a company that produces nickel in Davao Oriental.
