Restless Kanlaon forces class suspensions in Canlaon City

NEGROS ORIENTAL—Canlaon City Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas announced the suspension of classes at all levels within the four-kilometer permanent danger zone of Mount Kanlaon due to increased tectonic volcanic earthquakes monitored by state seismologists.

Cardenas issued an executive order following an advisory from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), which emphasized the heightened volcanic activity around Mt. Kanlaon, posing risks to the safety and welfare of Canlaon City residents.

PHIVOLCS confirmed that seismic activity around the volcano has increased, leading to volcanic tremors, landslides, and the potential eruption of Mt. Kanlaon.

In response, Cardenas decided to suspend classes to ensure the community’s safety.

“The safety of students and school personnel is of paramount importance and should be prioritized amidst the ongoing volcanic activity and the possibility of further seismic disturbances,” stated a portion of Cardenas’ executive order.

The mayor also ordered the mandatory evacuation of residents within the four-kilometer radius danger zone to ensure the safety and well-being of those at risk from the volcanic unrest.
