Philippines mulls diplomatic protest vs. China over Escoda Shoal incident

The Philippines is considering filing a diplomatic protest against China following the recent ramming incident over the Escoda Shoal at the West Philippine Sea.

“One of the actions we are considering, as you all know, is that, like in past situations, our Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) would likely file a diplomatic protest or note verbale. This is currently being seriously studied by the DFA,” newly appointed National Maritime Council (NMC) spokesperson Vice Admiral Alexander Lopez said in a Palace briefing on Tuesday.

However, he said the Philippines maintained its stance in pursuing a diplomatic and peaceful approach rather than “kinetic actions.”

“In line with the President’s directive, if we go beyond diplomatic or peaceful methods, you can imagine — if you’re referring to more kinetic actions, that wouldn’t be in the best interest of our country, China, or the region,” Lopez said.

“The Philippines will continue to uphold its rights and jurisdictions in the West Philippine Sea, sustain our routine maritime activities, and protect its territory and maritime zones from environmental degradation and other illegal activities,” he added.
