Bogotá, Colombia – Two football fans were killed and 14 injured Sunday in a street fight in the Colombian city of Medellin between supporters of rival teams, police said.

The victims, aged 25 and 34, were fans of the club Independiente de Medellin which on Saturday lost 3-1 to Atletico Nacional, according to police official Henry Bello.

He said followers of the teams attacked each other with “sharp weapons and blunt objects” in the vicinity of the Atanasio Girardot stadium in Medellin that hosted Saturday’s match.

The same stadium saw clashes between Atletico Nacional fans and police earlier this month.

Medellin mayor Daniel Quintero, according to whom the dead were one from each club, offered a reward on his official Twitter account of 200 million pesos (about $43,000) for information about those responsible.

On Thursday, senior football and government officials had met to discuss tougher sanctions against people who encourage violence in Colombian sports stadiums — a frequent occurrence.

Elsewhere on the continent, a match between university football teams was ended after 30 minutes in the city of Concepcion Sunday after fireworks were hurled onto the field, injuring several people.

Support staff, supporters and a policeman were among those hurt, officials said.

President Gabriel Boric took to Twitter to condemn the violence, which he blamed on his official account on a “small group of criminals.”

“We are going to identify and bring down the full weight of the law on those who caused this,” the president said.
