The death toll in the heavy rains and floods caused by a shear line and the northeast monsoon over the past week has risen to 17, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Friday.

The agency said five fatalities were reported in Bicol, four each in Zamboanga and Northern Mindanao, three in Eastern Visayas, and one in Davao Region.

Seven people were injured while two others remained missing, the NDRRMC said in its updated report.

Recurrent pressure areas, a shear line, and the rains have brought about floods and landslides across the country during the past week.

The NDRRMC also reported that total of 121,950 families or 523,991 people were affected in Cagayan, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Western Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, Soccsksargen and the Bangsamoro autonomous region.

More than 13,400 families were forced to seek shelter in evacuation centers.

The NDRRMC estimated the cost of damage to infrastructure at P165.7 million, and to agriculture at P252.7 million.

The NDRRMC report showed that some 530 houses were damaged, while 31 roads and 13 bridges were rendered impassable for all types of vehicles.

At least five towns have declared a state of calamity. They were Tubod in Lanao del Norte, Dolores in Eastern Samar, San Miguel in Leyte, and Gandara and Basey in Samar.

The NDRRMC said the government has released P30.9 million to assist the affected residents.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said it still accepts donations, in cash or in kind, for the flood victims.

DSWD spokesman Rommel Lopez said cash donors may call 09434648026 or 09957153926 for proper coordination.

The Philippines is ranked among the most vulnerable nations to the impacts of climate change, and scientists have warned that storms are becoming more powerful as the world gets warmer.
