Grab denies riders’ claims of ‘unfair treatment’

Grab Philippines on Friday denied allegations that they are unfairly treating its delivery boys in Cebu.

“In light of the November 10 event that transpired in Cebu, we are saddened that these groups have resorted to using fake social media accounts to harass, incite threat of harm, misinform, and even do fake bookings on our community,” Grab Philippines said in a statement.

“Based on our records, several of these individuals – who have posed as Grab delivery partners, are in fact not Grab delivery partners. These individuals are determined to sow discord and discontent, and are willing to place the livelihoods of many Grab partners at risk,” it added.

Grab Philippines said the sentiments from these groups do not represent the general sentiment of Grab’s broader partner communities across the country.

“We continue to engage our partners, and a far greater majority of them choose to stay on the platform because they understand and appreciate the recent measures that we had to do for their welfare and wellbeing,” Grab said.

“Our partners need meaningful livelihood opportunities so that they can provide for their families, and we are focused to supporting them amidst these very challenging economic times,” it added.

The company also reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to empowering its partners across the Philippines.
“We are fully motivated to find ways in ensuring that our partners still earn meaningfully from the platform despite a very tough economy,” Grab added.

Digital Pinoys national campaigner Ronald Gustilo said the protest action held by Grab delivery riders in Cebu is the tip of an iceberg of issues facing Grab.

“The protest action held by Cebu-based Grab riders only show how unfair Grab is treating its riders. The fact that they pushed through with their protest despite possible off-boarding from Grab shows the gravity of the situation delivery riders is facing,” he added.

Gustilo said that Grab riders in other areas have also protested against Grab’s unfair treatment of its delivery riders.

Last August, Grab riders in Angeles City, Pampanga protested against Grab’s sudden price-drop of its delivery charge.

According to the protesting riders, Grab claims that it was part of their promo but the riders were not properly compensated.

“What happened in Cebu and Pampanga is actually happening in areas where Grab is operating. Many delivery riders, which Grab calls as their “partners”, are complaining against Grab’s maltreatment. In turn, consumers also bear the brunt as they are inconvenienced as well,” he said.
