Jordan, Guimaras—Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte-Carpio said the annual Palarong Pambansa sports competition will be shelved this year as she reminded teachers to focus on academics to keep up with students’ learning losses brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Ngayong taon po wala tayong Palarong Pambansa pero sa susunod na taon gumagawa sila ng draft proposal para sa Palarong Pambansa (This year we won’t have the Palarong Pambansa but next year we have a draft proposal for it),” she said in a Department of Education statement.

Duterte-Carpio said she will also release a department order that will mandate only co-curricular and academic activities for this school year, with extra-curricular activities to be prohibited.

The still-to-be-released department order, Duterte said, will specify standards of school activities allowed for this school year.

“We built a list to identify the extra-curricular and to identify co-curricular (activities),” the Vice President said.

“We’re here to check up on you and remind you that we need to focus on academics for our students to catch up on the learning losses during the two years that they didn’t have in-person classes,” Duterte-Carpio said during her visit at the Don Pedro Vasquez Memorial School.

The Vice President said there is a real difference between “pure online” classes and in-person classes for all learners.

She also said some traditional school activities will not push through this year as DepEd’s direction is to prioritize the academic development of the students.

The Don Pedro Vasquez Memorial School has 11 teachers and 293 students. Insufficient number of classrooms is also one of the major challenges of the school to accommodate their students.

Duterte said that since the construction of classrooms is devolved to the local government units, DepEd is only permitted by the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to construct school buildings in 5th and 6th class municipalities, the last mile schools, and those belonging to the Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDA).

However, she said the department has been communicating with the DBM to allow DepEd implement school constructions.
