The Port of Subic has destroyed smuggled cigarettes and overstaying containers of assorted household goods and personal effects worth more than P95 million.

The shipments were destroyed through shredding, crushing, and dumping in an accredited facility operated by Greenleaf 88 Non-hazardous Waste Disposal in Pampanga.

The condemned shipment of cigarettes that were seized last year was consigned to Goldlink Int’l Subic Inc.

Last month, the Subic port also condemned assorted brands of counterfeit cigarettes with a market value of P38 million.

The destroyed 1×40’ container shipment of cigarettes was consigned to Subic Red Dragon.

The condemnation was conducted in an accredited facility located at Marilao, Bulacan owned by Malia 7 Waste Collection Services through incineration to ensure 100 percent destruction of the counterfeit goods.

Subic District collector Maritess Martin has assured the public that the Port will remain vigilant in protecting the country’s borders against the proliferation of illicit goods.

Aside from health and safety concerns to the public, the condemnation process is part of the Bureau of Customs’ efforts to enhance trade facilitation by decongesting warehouses to ensure adequate facilities for arriving shipments.
