Chiz: Robredo link with Reds is ‘far-fetched’

Former Sen. Chiz Escudero described as “far-fetched and incredulous” the alleged communist links of presidential candidate Vice President Leni Robredo.

In his Twitter account, Escudero posted that although he and Robredo may have different positions on whether to retain or abolish the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC), he does not believe Robredo plans to forge an alliance with rebels.

“I am in favor of the retention of the NTF-ELCAC … [and] @lenirobredo may have a different position, but I find the allegation that she … has entered into an alliance/agreement w/ the [communist] both far-fetched [and] incredulous, to say the least,” said Escudero.

The Sorsogon governor is a guest candidate in the senatorial slate of the vice president.

Escudero has earlier expressed support for the NTF-ELCAC, saying the program has benefitted 16 barangays in his province. The agency implements the government’s Barangay Development Program.

Robredo has repeatedly said she is supportive of the “whole-of-nation” approach by the NTF-ELCAC, adding that what she is against is for the program to be used for “red-tagging.”

Robredo also urged her supporters to be respectful of the other presidential candidates amid their campaign for her. “Campaign for us, but be respectful of those who have different beliefs,” she said.

Escudero is among the latest personalities who have defended Robredo from the allegations after President Rodrigo Duterte and Senator Ping Lacson released separate statements claiming that the Robredo camp has aligned itself with the communists to disrupt the May elections.

Former Senator Antonio Trillanes, who is also running for senator under the Robredo-Pangilinan banner, has dared both Duterte and Lacson to “name names” or be dismissed as “fake news peddlers.”

Robredo meanwhile met her supporters in Kidapawan, Cotabato.

“Not all people have the same privilege. So my request to you is to go beyond what you are used to. It should not be that just because others have a different belief you will quarrel with them. That’s what we’re saying about radical love. Even if the others have different beliefs, first of all, there’s a need for respect,” she said.

In General Santos City, she also encouraged people loyal to her to listen first to others why they support such candidates. With Rio N. Araja
