The Supreme Court (SC) ordered several courts nationwide to close, starting Friday (January 28) to Tuesday, February 15 amid COVID-19 surges.

The SC said these courts are in areas placed under Alert Level 3 until February 15.

The SC, in a circular, also said courts in Region 4-B: Palawan; Region I0: Camiguin; Region 11: Davao Occidental; Caraga: Dinagat Islands; and BARMM: Tawi-Tawi, Sulu, will be physically closed Malacanang meanwhile has appointed two trial court judges as associate justices of the Court of Appeals, the SC said on Friday.

Appointed by President Duterte as CA justices were regional trial court (RTC) Judges Maximo Mercado De Leon and Jacinto Gavino Fajardo Jr.

The SC made the announcement after Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea transmitted to Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo the appointment papers of De Leon and Fajardo on Jan. 28.

It was not known immediately if they have taken their oaths of office and assumed their new posts. Four CA associate justices have so far been appointed by the President this month of January.

Earlier appointed were CA Associate Justices Jennifer Joy Chua Ong and Michael Ong.

Chua Ong used to be an undersecretary in the Office of the Appointments Secretary of the Office of the President while Ong was the senior deputy executive secretary. Both have taken their oaths of office before Chief Justice Gesmundo. With Rey E. Requejo
