Crimes such as robbery, car and motor thefts, rape, and physical injury went down in Metro Manila, the National Capital Region Police Office reported on Wednesday.

Metro Manila police director P/Maj. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr. said the NCRPO recorded a decline on its focus crimes for the past 440 days covering the period of Nov. 10, 2020, to Jan. 23, 2022.

Based on police records, the crime rate on the said period was 109,079, which is 16.9 percent lower than the previous 131,230 incidents recorded in 441 days covering the period of Sept. 5, 2019, to Nov. 9, 2020.

The focus crimes include homicide, physical injury, robbery, theft, vehicle theft, motorcycle theft, and rape while non-index crimes refer to other illegal acts, including violations of special laws or local ordinances.

Danao said cases that mostly posted the biggest drop were theft with 16 percent from 4,494 to 3,756; physical injury with 42 percent from 1,934 to 934; and robbery with 22 percent from 2,053 to 1,603 incidents.

The numbers of motorcycle theft also went down by 25 percent from 836 to 625, murder by 24 percent from 802 to 611; rape by six percent from 1,315 to 1,241; homicide by 21 percent from 221 to 175; car theft by 16 percent from 172 to 144, and occurrence of other special complex crimes by 34 percent from 66 to 43 which sums up to the 21 percent decreased of index crimes and 9 percent decreased of non-index crimes in the region.

“We do not only give credit to our men for their unwavering efforts but we also appreciate the trust and confidence of the public through their support and cooperation on the programs of the PNP particularly in the fight against all forms of criminality. We assure our
commitment of serving and protecting our community 24/7,” said Danao.

Danao also attributed the significant accomplishment to the NCRPO’s continuing war against drugs and other crimes.

The NCRPO chief said police presence and the aggressive drive against criminality and illegal drugs have led to more arrests, neutralization of criminals and confiscation of illegal drugs which will be considered as a significant accomplishment.

This factor, he added, serves as deterrent to potential criminals to pursue their nefarious ways and evil designs against the innocent
people.
