Isko suspends listening tours, focuses on city

Presidential candidate and Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso has suspended his “Listening Tour” sorties to allow him to focus on city’s health emergency preparedness against the coronavirus pandemic, particularly the recent spike in the number of cases involving the highly-contagious Omicron variant.

The camps of former senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Sen. Manny Pacquiao on Monday also suspended their sorties over the same coronavirus concerns.

Meanwhile, even if there is still no spike in Covid-19 cases due to Omicron variant, Senator Panfilo Lacson on Tuesday said his camp has always been conscious of physical distancing.

The Partido Reporma standard bearer in the upcoming elections said they have also been strongly adhering to other health protocols especially the superspreader activities.

“No, I don’t really think so. What I really want now when you are infected is that we can treat you. What I want now is for you to be healed immediately when you have an infection. We want you to have a facility, you have a doctor,” Moreno told journalists after inspecting the Araullo Quarantine Facility, which is part of the city government’s preparation for the expected exponential rise in Covid-19 infections.

The Aksyon Demokratiko standard-bearer said what is important right now for him and other Manila city officials is to focus all their efforts in halting the surge in Covid cases and keep as many people safe from infections.

“We are focused here on the pandemic now, this (Omicron) surge. Because we need to anticipate this so I am preparing our city and our people. That (Listening Tour) will come later,” Moreno stressed.

According to him, there is a need for the city government to act fast as more people-including doctors, nurses and other medical frontliners-have been infected or re-infected by the virus.

“Just to be fair to the public, we have a lot of medical frontliners who are infected as of 9 a.m. today, as per report of our hospitals. We have a lot of nurses, doctors who are infected,” Moreno disclosed, without giving the data how many medical frontliners were infected COVID-19.

To help lessen the number of infections particularly among health workers in various hospitals, 12 quarantine facilities have been activated by the City of Manila, Moreno said.

“We are trying to prepare our city in our own little way through our health department and Manila Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council and the Manila Police District of any possible surge that will demand quarantine facility. We have activated our quarantine facilities about two days ago,” Moreno said.

The 47-year-old local chief executive again took the opportunity to appeal to adults and parents of children ages 11 to 17-years-old to get themselves immediately vaccinated because the majority of the 544 active cases in Manila as of January 2, 2022 are unvaccinated individuals.

“So I’m calling for you to get vaccinated. If you don’t get vaccinated, the day will come, a few hours now or a few days now or weeks, the regulation of the unvaccinated will be tighter and tighter,” Moreno pointed out.

“If you are not vaccinated the chances of getting infected is high. Omicron is highly contagious, most likely you will get Covid,” he warned.

To those people who are under isolation but are prone to violate quarantine rules, Moreno encouraged them to be more responsible.

“I just call on people to be responsible. We should always think not only of our own happiness or privilege because you have money or you are rich and can pay. Be responsible for your family and others,” Moreno said.

Moreno also said that aside from malls, those who are unvaccinated will not be allowed to dine in restaurants.

“Today, the Metro Manila mayors have issued a resolution with regard to other rules and I will leave it to (MMDA) Chairman (Benhur) Abalos to explain it further about the passenger vehicle and all other things. But definitely with us, for now, if you are not vaccinated stay home as much as possible,” Moreno said.

Moreno reported the delivery of an additional 20,000 tablets of Mulnopiravir, a live-saving drug for patients having mild to moderate symptoms.
