The Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines is aiming at the production of some one million electric vehicles in the country by 2020, spurred by an unprecedented growth of the  sector last year.

At the 4th Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit 2015 in Ortigas, EVAP president Rommel Juan  expressed confidence in achieving the target because “the level of growth we are experiencing for the industry is unprecedented.”

Juan said the e-trike sub-sector alone is expected to grow by as much as 500 percent for 2015.

EVAP says close to 40,000 electric vehicles will start plying Philippine roads this year alone.

“This year, our sales projections are higher than last year’s actual sales: 20,000 e-bikes/e-motorycyles, 3,000 e-trikes and 500 e-jeepneys for a total of about 23,5000 EVs,” Juan said.

Juan said 15,750 e-vehicles were sold last year.

“We are far from one million EVs but we are getting there at a faster rate and with greater intensity. All we need to do is to just sustain the gains we have achieved, maintain the momentum, and we will reach our goal by 2020,” he said.

He said there are numerous reasons for the emerging industry to be optimistic of the future.

Juan cited Talino EV and Phil Etro  are working together for service to supply e-trikes to cities such as Makati and Quezon City.

He said tourist destinations such as Boracay, Davao and Surigao are also starting to embrace e-vehicles.

“In Mandaluyong, mainstream e-trike operations are also now going full blast with the efforts of e-trike financier cum operator EV Wealth. Molino in Cavite runs a complete e-trike transport system complete with the much-needed infrastructure like public charging stations, all supplied by Kea Industrial Co,” Juan said.

He added that educational institutions have also started embracing e-vehicles that will also spur the development of the industry.

Juan said the passage of the pending Alternative Fuel Vehicles Incentives Bill will also spur the development of the industry and cement the Philippines position as the e-vehicle hub in the region.
