Mobile wallet app GCash and low-cost airline AirAsia Philippines officially announced their partnership on Monday to offer the latter’s customers new mode of payment for flights, hotel bookings, and travel items.

GCash users can pay for AirAsia flights, travel items, and accommodation in the airline’s partner hotels. Offline payment via GCash is available at AirAsia check-in counters.

To mark their partnership, AirAsia is offering 10 percent off on flights booked on airasia.com or AirAsia Super App and paid with GCash today until June 13.

GCash-paying customers can also get an extra 10 percent for the flight portion on SNAP and partner hotels today until June 13. An additional P500 discount on partner hotels can be availed of by the first 100 customers with a minimum purchase of P5,000. To avail of the promos, use the code AAGCASH.

In a virtual press conference, Globe president and chief executive Ernest Cu said AirAsia “is a valuable addition to our robust portfolio. We started off with offline payments and we look forward to seeing them in GLife as one of our partner merchants.”

The over 40 million GCash users to date can also pay at AirAsia check-in counters nationwide for their additional luggage, meals, and other add-ons by scanning the QR code.

“This partnership with AirAsia is a continuation of its (GCash) thrust to provide users with safe and convenient payment solutions. AirAsia supports this thrust as it continues to provide its customers with convenience and safety when flying with them,” GCash president and chief executive Martha Sazon said in a statement.

AirAsia Philippines chief executive officer Ricky Isla seconded, highlighting the importance of providing hassle-free travel experience as they await for the industry to “recover by 2023 at the earliest”.

“Providing convenience through digital and contactless solutions while observing the highest standards of safety has always been AirAsia’s commitment to our guests. Our partnership with GCash, the country’s leading e-wallet, empowers our guests with flexible cashless options as we all gear up to fly again to our favorite leisure destinations,” said Isla.

AirAsia Philippines chief financial officer Rey Berja, for his part, said the partnership was “a great way of expanding both our subscriber bases. FinTech plays a huge part in shaping consumer behaviors, with the Philippines’ extensive lockdown period, plenty have turned to digital services strengthening e-commerce in the Philippines.”
