Hits and misses at the 2021 Oscars

Stars once again descended on the red (or was it fuchsia?) carpet during the in-person Academy Awards 2021, a sorely missed affair after a couple of virtually-held awarding ceremonies.

Seeing the nominees and presenters together, albeit in an intimate ceremony, at Union Station in Los Angeles, California felt like we were back to normal. And we were definitely excited to see glitz and glamour outside the living room.

Vanessa Kirby

The Best Actress nominee rocked a lovely custom Gucci pale-rose silk gazar strapless column gown with box pleat dramatic train and cutout detail at the waist — a beautiful contrast to her dark red lips and dark-colored nails.

Carey Mulligan

We saw gold dresses more than once on this red carpet, but it was Mulligan’s two-piece Valentino Haute Couture gown that snatched our attention. The British actress looked stunning in the matching gold bandeau top and high-waisted full skirt.

Viola Davis

Textures, textures, textures. The award-winning star was a vision in white custom Alexander McQueen with thistle appliqué and floor-length skirt. Davis finished her look with diamond accessories from Forevermark and a pristine white Jimmy Choo clutch.

Margot Robbie

There was something charming yet edgy in Robbie’s silver floral number — a custom Chanel sheath dress in ennobled metallic lace with thin straps which she accessorized with a pair of drop pearl earrings, also from the French luxury house.

Colman Domingo

We love a guy who wears pink well. Example: the Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom star in hot pink Atelier Versace suit in all its 4,500 Swarovski crystals and sequins glory.

Laura Dern

The Oscar de la Renta dress she wore on the red carpet did not give justice to her talent. Dern looked like she was emerging from an asymmetrical feathered skirt wearing a black mock neck top. It was just confusing.

Reese Witherspoon

Here’s another star we love, but, oh, that look was definitely a choice. The red Dior dress with asymmetrical neckline and pleated design would have been okay on its own. Ditch the black belt, Reese!
