Memorable fashion moments recreated

From Princess Diana’s iconic David and Elizabeth Emanuel-designed wedding dress to Billy Porter’s unapologetic custom Christian Siriano velvet tuxedo gown, some of the memorable fashion looks in modern history are recreated using upcycled materials and day-to-day objects.

Dubbed as #FDMRECOUTURE, the sustainable couture recreations showcase the creativity and resourcefulness of the Fashion Design and Merchandising Program students of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde School of Design and Arts.

The aspiring designers put a playful spin on some of the recreated looks. Porter’s Oscars dress, for instance, is laundry-ready in Darius Juson’s hamper-carrying recreation. Meanwhile, Nancy Hung taps a four-legged friend to be the fairy godmother to her Cinderella in her version of Zendaya’s 2019 Met Gala look.

The activity also displays the students’ skills they honed from their classes and workshops, from fabric manipulation to the exploration of innovative techniques. With sustainability in mind, they channel their ingenuity using recycled plastic materials, old curtains and discarded fabrics, appliqué lace, and latex balloons, among others.

In addition to style statements that graced the red carpet and fashion magazines and blogs, fashion moments on canvas are also brought to life.

Micca Beatriz Amor offers a modern take on Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” while Zoie Garcia recreates Justiniano Asuncion’s “La Yndia Del Campo Tiendera.”

According to Benilde, the student with the best recreation will be granted with a project collaboration with Humble Sustainability as well as a portable machine from Triple K Sewing Machines
