Caloocan City Mayor Oscar “Oca” Malapitan, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, and National Historical Commission of the Philippines chair Rene Escalante presented the flower offering at the Bonifacio Monument Circle on Monday in commemoration of the 157th birth anniversary of national hero Andres Bonifacio.

Following the simple dedication at the shrine of the revolutionary leader and founder of the Katipunan, the audience heard President Rodrigo Duterte’s virtual message regarding the celebration.

According to Mayor Oca, although this year’s Bonifacio Day celebration “is simple because we are facing a pandemic, the tribute for Bonifacio’s bravery and greatness will remain.”

“In this time of pandemic, we will continue to practice Bonifacio’s courage and concern for both the Filipinos and our country,” said Malapitan.

Also attending the celebration were Armed Forces Lt. Gen. Erickson Gloria, Northern Police District Director Brig. Gen. Ronaldo Ylagan, Caloocan Police chief Col. Samuel Mina, Bureau of Fire Protection Caloocan Supt. Aristotle Foreign, Vice Mayor Maca Asistio, Councilors Enteng Malapitan and Lanz Almeda, City Administrator Oliver Hernandez, and other city government officials.

In Manila, before daybreak, wreaths were likewise laid in place in front of the hero’s statue in Bonifacio Plaza in Divisoria, Tondo district, where the “Supremo” was born.

City government personnel were busy in the past few days preparing the Kartilya shrine for the event.

Bonifacio is considered the father of the Philippine Revolution against colonial Spain. He was one of the founders of the Kataas-taasang Kagalang-galangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (KKK) which led the revolt against the Spaniards.
