Torres out to stop surging Phogat

Jomary “The Zamboanginian Fighter” Torres is aiming to upset Ritu “The Indian Tigress” Phogat when the two meet at ONE: BIG BANG next Friday, December 4.

Torres will try to derail Phogat’s hype train while looking to end her own struggles when they meet in the Singapore Indoor Stadium – though it won’t be an easy task.

Phogat has emerged as one of the brightest young stars in ONE Championship, winning all three of her bouts using her world-class wrestling to overwhelm her foes inside the Circle.

“Honestly she's World Champion material,” Torres said.

“I think it’s only a matter of time before she becomes one, especially since she’s training at Evolve and everything she needs when it comes to improving and preparing are taken care of.”

That doesn’t mean she’s going to willingly roll over and let Phogat do her thing.

Tough as her next bout is, Torres vows to come in swinging, give everything she has, and return to her winning ways in the atomweight division.

“We’re looking for openings. We’ve been studying her, and we know that it’s not going to be easy matching her wrestling,” Torres admitted.  “But there’s still a chance, even if it’s just one percent, we’ll take it.”

While Phogat’s recent results may speak for themselves, Torres noted that the young Indian is far from invincible, and she plans to show it next week.

“She might be good, but she’s only human. She can make mistakes, and that’s what we’re looking at,” Torres said.

“I am also coming in very motivated because I want to do it for my family, who’s been struggling in these tough times, and of course for the Philippines. My determination will be the key in this match,” she said.

She doesn’t want to make any bold claims, but Torres promises to jump on the winning moment if it presents itself.

“I don’t want to predict anything, but fans can expect a good fight. My goal is to knock her out, but I am confident that I can hang with her elsewhere,” Torres said.
