Colby “Chaos” Covington and Mackenzie Dern posted spectacular, though contrasting, victories at UFC Fight Night at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas yesterday morning.
Covington pushed around and bullied Tyron Woodley in four rounds before finally forcing a stoppage over the former UFC Welterweight champion in the fifth round of the main event.
Dern didn’t need as much time as she seemed in a hurry to end her fight winning by submission (Armbar) right in the first round.
In the interview immediately after the fight, Covington veered completely off the expected track as he instead commented about how US President Donald Trump will win the presidential election November this year.
“Ladies and gentlemen. The silent majority is ready to make some noise. If you thought that was a beating, wait till November 3rd when Donald Trump gets his hands on Sleepy Joe (Biden). That’s gonna be a landslide,” said Covington, an avowed supporter of the US President.
Covington also took a shot at professional athletes, in particular singling out NBA star LeBron James, who have been supporting the civil rights campaign in behalf of blacks in the US.
“I want to dedicate this fight to all the first responders, all the military out there. You know, this world would not be safe without you guys. You know, you keep us safe. Not this ‘woke’ athletes. I’m sick of these ‘woke’ athletes, man, and these spineless cowards like LeBron James,” said Covington who had an American flag draped around his shoulders in the cage-side interview.
The fight was virtually even early on with Covington holding a slight edge until late in the fourth round.
Covington stayed away from Woodley’s powerful strikes. When they engaged it was mostly Covington pushing Woodley against the cage and administering punishment with short chopping blows.
Woodley barely survived the fourth round. Covington pushed Woodley against the cage late in the round and split open his right eyebrow with an elbow. The badly battered Woodley had blood streaming out of a cut above his right eye when the round ended.
Covington, who had won every round, was on top of Woodley again early in the final round. Woodley had Covington under his armpit and was apparently trying to complete a guillotine choke when Woodley suddenly screamed in pain.
With Woodley apparently injured and unable to continue the referee stopped the fight awarding Covington the victory.
